Professor Hossein Mozdarani studied at Iran University of Medical Sciences where he obtained B.Sc. degree in Radiology in 1983, then granted an scholarship by The Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of I.R. Iran for further studies. He was admitted to the St Andrews University, UK, where he first obtained M.Sc. degree in Radiation Biophysics-Biology and then a PhD in Medical Cytogenetics (Radiation Cytogenetics) in 1989. He currently holds the position of Professor of the Medical Genetics Department at the faculty of Medical Sciences of Tarbiat Modares University, where has been engaged in post-graduate research and teaching for 30 years. He has supervised over 30 Ph.D and over 130 M.Sc students for their Thesis projects. He has published over 300 papers in well reputed national and international Journals and Editor or translator of 21 academic books. His research work is appreciated by various awards from well reputed organizations such as Kharizmi international, Razi Medical Research and Royan international award. He is a leading pioneer in radiobiology and radiation genetic toxicology in Iran and has a broad background in genetic toxicology of ionizing radiation as well as chemical and environmental factors affecting human health. His main theme of research is genome instability induced by physico-chemical agents leading to carcinogenesis and ill health such as infertility. He introduced a new class of chemicals as radiation countermeasure which may be beneficial for cancer patients. He first proposed a postgraduate course in radiobiology in 1998 where based on this proposal first MSc course in radiobiology was established in Medical Universities 8 years later. He is also concessionaire and Founder Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Radiation Research and editorial board member of several international and national scientific journals. He also founded and established Medical Genetics Department for post-graduate studies at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Tarbiat Modares University; Infertility Genetic Department of the Royan Institute; Cytogenetic Laboratory of Genomic Research Center of Shahid Beheshti University as well as cytogenetic laboratory of Pasteur institute. He has been scientific committee member of the international organization for medical physicists (IOMP) since 2009. He established a radiogenomic research group in Iran for the first time in 2018. His Research interests include: Radiation toxicogenomics; Radiation and Chemical Carcinogenesis; chemical protection against Oxidative Stress, DNA damage and DNA repair. Transgenerational genome instability and chromosomal instability syndromes.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Asia-Oceania Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (AFOMP), AFOMP recognized Professor Hossein Mozdarani as one of the Outstanding Medical Physicist in the AFOMP region for his tremendous effort into the development of medical physics, nationally, in the AFOMP region and the community.
